Media Review:

Song Review: Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses

By Denise Sullivan, All Music Guide

Caught in a half-world, on an understated sonic cloud, "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" ( Achtung Baby, 1991) sounds like it's going to break out from its ethereal pen but it never does. The song could just as easily be classified a mistake as an experiment: According to the book U2 at the End of the World, "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" was one of those songs that began life strictly as an idea as opposed to a fully formed entity from the artist's head. Yet, the genesis wasn't progressing or evolving particularly well within the band structure; the tune was edging its way toward the scrap heap but Bono was persistent in its salvation. The end result is a lyrical triumph, though production-wise it's not particularly extraordinary, but it is a departure point of sorts, for U2 was about to take their sound from the days of The Joshua Tree into the '90s. The singer is waiting, waiting, but his subject isn't quite free nor is he the "accident waiting to happen" of which he sings. Taking a while to tune in at the top, the wall of noise guitar settles into melody while the bass and drums supply a lo-fi-ish groove; the surprise is that though it builds climactically, the song never approaches the wide-awake Big Music that is the patented U2 sound. And on that score, the experiment succeeds (though an argument could be made that the chorus is lock, stock, and barrel U2).
