Review: The Unforgettable Fire [12"]
3 stars (out of 5)
By JT Griffith, All Music Guide
This single is U2's second from 1984's The Unforgettable Fire and was released with nine different tracks on six different worldwide versions. The Unforgettable Fire takes its name from a painting exhibition by survivors from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings at the Chicago Peace Museum, which U2 had visited in 1983. This 12" vinyl version was released throughout the world with five tracks: the title track; a sound check version of "A Sort of Homecoming" from their November 15, 1984, Wembley Stadium performance; "Love Comes Tumbling"; "The Three Sunrises"; and "Bass Trap." The three non-album tracks are all from the The Unforgettable Fire recording sessions. This 12" is only missing the song "60 Seconds in Kingdom Come," which is the least essential of the B-sides here. This is one of the better versions because it is chock-filled with non-LP material. "The Unforgettable Fire" peaked at number three on the U.K. singles chart.
