Review: Fire

4 stars (out of 5)

By JT Griffith, All Music Guide

Fire is the first single from U2's 1981 album October. It was released in Ireland and the U.K. as two different 7" versions, a single disc and a double disc. The single disc only contains the studio tracks "Fire" and "J.Swallow." This, the double disc, is the most rare and has the most tracks. It includes live versions of "11 O'Clock Tick Tock," "The Ocean," and "Cry/The Electric Co." from the band's March 1981 performance at the Paradise Theater in Boston. This double disc is the only place to find "Cry/The Electric Co." live from Boston, making it a rare and important collectible. Eight songs from the Paradise concert have been released on U2's singles: the aforementioned four from Fire, "Out of Control" from 1980's I Will Follow, "I Will Follow" from 1981's Gloria, and "Stories for Boys" and "Out of Control" from 1998's Sweetest Thing, Pt. 2 The double-disc version of Fire is essential to reconstruct this early concert.
