Review: Desire [US 3 Track CD]
3 stars (out of 5)
By JT Griffith, All Music Guide
U2 released some of the best singles ever for 1987's The Joshua Tree and continued the trend for their next record, Rattle and Hum. Four singles were eventually released, beginning with "Desire." U2 received a lot of criticism for the album, much of it undeserved. The band tried to inject an raw, Americana feel into their music, and one of the results was this song. "Desire" is also the answer to an interesting trivia question: What was U2's first number one single in the U.K.? "Desire" picked up the Grammy for Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group With Vocal and the 1988 Rolling Stone readers' pick for Best Single. This CD version was widely released (which was rare for U2 singles of the time) and includes the title track and the B-sides "Hallelujah Here She Comes" and "Desire (Hollywood Remix)." The "Hollywood Remix" version of "Desire" was aired on Miami Vice in the fifth season episode entitled "Fruit of the Poison Tree." The remix is somewhat silly, but is interesting for its samples of local Los Angeles newscasts. "Desire" was produced by Jimmy Iovine. This is the version to track down, though collectors may like the 12" version more.
